Falling is not a normal part of aging.

Education is the most important step to being ready to prevent a fall. Evidence-based falls prevention programs will help older adults learn how to address their fear of falling and what they can do to improve or sustain their strength. This video highlights four of these classes: Tai Chi, Stepping On, A Matter of Balance, and the Otago Exercise Program. For more information go to ncoa.org/FallsPrevention.

In older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury related emergency department visits. It is also the major cause of hip fractures and responsible for more than half of fatal head injuries. San Diego county is just one of our counties included in the worldwide movement to address this growing public health issue (Fall Prevention Awareness) and many are working closely with occupational therapy practitioners as key contributors to reducing these falls. The theme this year is “take a stand to prevent falls”. It helps to unite professionals, older adults, caregivers, and family members to play a part in raising the awareness of this frequency and trying to prevent falls in the older adult population. More than 70 national organizations and other professional associations help comprise the falls free initiative.
There is a falls prevention toolkit which includes a how to guide and power point presentations, handouts and more.

About the Author:

I am a practicing social worker for over 35 years, mostly in health care. Social work has been both rewarding and challenging. The profession has allowed me to work in areas such as trauma, oncology, orthopedics, intensive care, psychiatric , hospice, maternal child health and other fields. I have taught classes, mentored SDSU students, worked with most of the larger health care companies in San Diego and recently went back to school for a certificate in school social work.

Acknowledging the need for improved resources and accessibility for the elderly, I have recently joined a home care company providing quality caregivers to clients in need, most of them wanting to remain in their own home environment with adequate supports.

Clients have taught me so much over the years. I am as excited about my work today as I was when I started and look forward to many more professional years ahead.
